Baytown

Baytown The early history of Baytown is intertwined with the early history of Texas. The first president of the Republic of Texas, David G. Burnet, and two-time president Sam Houston both lived in the neighborhood. Dr. Ashbel Smith, Texas ambassador to France and England, first president of the University of Texas in Austin, and a founder of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, called Goose Creek home. After the last president of Texas, Anson Jones, committed suicide, his widow, Mary Jones, moved here with their children. She later helped form the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and served as its first president. The major industry in the 1800s was brick making, and over a 100-year period, up to 12 million bricks a year were made on Cedar Bayou and shipped to Galveston, where many buildings built with these bricks still stand. In 1908, the industry became oil with the discovery of the Goose Creek oil field, which, for a while, was the largest producing field in Texas. Because of the proximity to the oil field and access to shipping, the huge Humble Oil Refinery was built at Baytown, starting up in 1919.

Route 66 in Missouri, Missouri, Images of America, Paperback

Route 66 in Missouri, Missouri, Images of America, Paperback Route 66 is the “Main Street of America,” heralded in song and popular culture. It took a maze of different routes through St. Louis before slashing diagonally across the “Show-Me State” through the beauty of the Ozarks. In between, there are classic motels, diners, tourist traps, and gas stations bathed in flashing and whirling neon lights. Natural wonders include crystal-clear streams, majestic bluffs, and wondrous caverns. Roadside marketers concocted legends about Jesse James, painted advertisements on barns, lived with deadly snakes, or offered curios such as pottery and handwoven baskets. That spirit is alive today at the Wagon Wheel and the Munger-Moss, the Mule, Meramec Caverns, and Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, just to name a few. Their stories are included here.

A&P, New Jersey, Images of America, Paperback

A&P, New Jersey, Images of America, Paperback This is the history of the supermarket where America grew up shopping, from the Hartford family’s legacy to the generations of shoppers who depended on A&P for fair prices and quality food.In 1859, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, known everywhere as A&P, began as a mail-order business located at 31 Vesey Street in downtown Manhattan. In 1925, A&P operated more than thirteen thousand grocery stores nationwide, with more than forty thousand employees. By 1950, approximately ten cents out of every dollar spent on food in the United States passed over A&P counters. A&P: The Story of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company tells the story of how cofounder George Huntington Hartford and his sons John and George brought A&P to a popularity with consumers that few companies have ever achieved. This stunning collection of vintage photographs shows such nostalgic scenes as the elegant early stores, their gleaming window displays, and the red horse-drawn delivery wagons with the A&P logo emblazoned on their sides. Shoppers choose from rows of colorful merchandise and fresh produce; uniformed storekeepers make change from ornate registers; and the founder’s son tastes A&P’s Eight O’Clock coffee. A&P is still an industry leader, and A&P: The Story of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company shows why.

Danville Revisited, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback

Danville Revisited, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback Situated along the Dan River, Danville is known historically as a major tobacco market in the 19th century. In 1865, Danville was chosen as the last capital of the Confederacy. Prosperity returned after the war with water-powered textile mills, which ushered in a 125-year legacy of Dan River Mills. Recently discovered images take the reader back in time to see Danville as it once was–a thriving boomtown on a major railroad line. Danville features graceful houses of worship along Millionaires Row and other architecturally significant landmarks. For more than a century, local photographers captured the everyday life of Danville through images of early businesses, schools, public transportation, and local disasters such as the Wreck of the Old 97 and the 1911 cyclone. Danville Revisited showcases the rich industrial and manufacturing history of this southern Virginia city.

Bodie, California, Images of America, Paperback

Bodie, California, Images of America, Paperback Nestled amongst the sage-covered, windswept hills of California’s Eastern Sierra is the site of one of the most notorious mining towns of the Old West. In 1859, gold was discovered in the treeless hills northeast of Mono Lake. By 1879, Bodie was a metropolis of nearly 10,000 souls and was briefly the third-largest city in California. Excitement was short-lived, however, and word soon spread that the mines had reached peak production. An exodus began, but contrary to popular belief, Bodie was never totally abandoned. People continued living in this curious and beautiful place throughout the 1950s, and in 1962, the California State Parks system purchased the town site. Now stabilized against the elements, Bodie is today known as the largest unrestored ghost town in the West.

Lauderdale County, Alabama, Images of America, Paperback

Lauderdale County, Alabama, Images of America, Paperback Lauderdale County lies in the northwest corner of Alabama, bordered on the north by Tennessee and defined on the west and south by the Tennessee River. Created in 1818, the county gets its name from Lt. Col. James Lauderdale, who died serving in county pioneer and War of 1812 hero Gen. John Coffee’s volunteer cavalry. Conditions well suited for agriculture and commerce attracted early settlers like Richard Rapier, James Jackson, and Samuel Burney, who flowed into the county using the same paths and trails forged by the Chickasaws and Cherokees who came before them. Much of the area’s activity centered around water, from the clear, bubbling springs at Jonathan Bailey’s health resort, Bailey Springs, to the Muscle Shoals Canal, an early attempt to safely circumvent the river’s treacherous rapids. Creeks and streams still feed cotton fields and fertile farms and, along with the river, offer recreational fishing, swimming, and boating.

Roseville, California, Images of America, Paperback

Roseville, California, Images of America, Paperback Long before white settlers arrived around 1849, the Maidu of Nisenan Indians, as they were sometimes called, were living in the vicinity of today’s Roseville. Known for its gently rolling hills and beautiful old oak trees, the area had many new arrivals during the Gold Rush. Many came to try their luck, but some came looking for land, not gold, and so stayed here. By 1864, the first several miles of the Central Pacific Railroad reached Roseville (then known as Grider’s), cementing its long-standing rail heritage. In 1909, the citizens voted to incorporate, and the sleepy little town became Placer County’s largest city, with today’s population surpassing 105,000. It is uncertain, but many agree Roseville is so called because of an abundance of wild roses in the region.

Mineral Wells, Texas, Images of America, Paperback

Mineral Wells, Texas, Images of America, Paperback The family of James Alvis Lynch headed west from Denison, Texas, to find a dry climate that would alleviate Lynch’s symptoms of malaria and his wife Amanda’s rheumatism. They traveled as far as the Brazos River, where U.S. 180 crosses today, when one of their oxen drowned, and the other was struck by lightning. To make matters worse, the Lynches learned of hair-raising tales of the struggles between Comanches and settlers. So on Christmas Eve in 1877, the Lynch family decided to settle 4 miles east of the Brazos in the beautiful valley between what are the East and West Mountains in present-day Mineral Wells. There, the Lynch family discovered the mineral-rich water that mended their maladies and brought tourists from far and wide to take the healing cure. The geology of the area also brought oil, gas, and brick plants, while the attacks on local settlers brought a military presence to the region. The history of Mineral Wells is alive today, as many descendants of early pioneers still live and work in the community, full of pride for their families’ contributions to the area.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a wide variety of industries made Kalamazoo a boomtown. Everything from paper, corsets, taxicabs, and pharmaceuticals allowed Kalamazoo to develop into a major center of manufacturing. These images are the subjects of this volume, which is organized to show the varied elements of Kalamazoo’s history. Anderson County, Texas, Images of America, Paperback

Anderson County, Texas, Images of America, Paperback From its roots in the unbroken wilderness of central East Texas, Anderson County has overcome many adversities to become the crossroads of East Texas. In the 1830s, rugged pioneers came to the fertile Trinity River Valley to carve out a place for themselves from the untamed country. These pioneers began a settlement along a stream about 10 miles east of the Trinity River in what would become Anderson County. Other families joined their effort, and Fort Houston was soon built in 1835-1836 to protect settlers from the dangers inherent to the wild frontier. Lost in the passage of time, many communities no longer exist. Today the principal towns are Palestine, Frankston, and Elkhart, but many other communities contribute to the quality of life across the county.

Miami and Erie Canal, Ohio, Images of America, Paperback

Miami and Erie Canal, Ohio, Images of America, Paperback Travel through the history of Ohio’s historic canals and follow its growth throughout the years told with hundreds of photographs. In the 1800s, the United States was a nation obsessed with finding a form of transportation that was the fastest, cheapest, and most reliable; at the time, canals were the answer. Canals broke through vast, open countryside, forested woodlands, and rolling hills to expose the heart of the nation to development. They took passengers and goods off of dusty or muddy roads and delivered them to their destinations faster and cheaper than by any other means. From Toledo to Cincinnati, the Miami and Erie Canal provided western Ohio with that sorely needed waterway and became part of the 1,000 miles of Ohio canals contributing to the national network of canals. Today, with the help of government, corporations, and citizens, many parts of the Ohio canal system have been preserved or restored and can be visited and experienced. Watered sections of canal quietly reflect a bygone era and lead an explorer down the towpaths of history.

US Forest Service Ranger Stations of the West, Oregon, Images of America, Paperb

US Forest Service Ranger Stations of the West, Oregon, Images of America, Paperb Pioneer US Forest Service rangers and their ranger stations are classic symbols of the American West. Rangers managed the public forests and ranges with the cattlemen, sheepmen, lumbermen, miners, homesteaders, and others who used–and, in many cases, still use– the lands to build and sustain economies and ways of life. The early rangers are no longer around. But some of the stations from which they protected the West’s national forests to secure “the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run,” as decreed by the first chief of the US Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot, remain to tell their stories and inspire their successors.

Beaumont’s Civil Air Patrol in World War II, Texas, Images of Aviation, Paperbac

Beaumont’s Civil Air Patrol in World War II, Texas, Images of Aviation, Paperbac During World War II, Beaumont and Port Arthur were leaders in oil refining, which literally kept the Allied wheels moving toward victory. The Germans recognized the importance of Texas oil and sent submarines to sink American ships carrying the valuable cargo. Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Coastal Base No. 10, located at the Municipal Airport in Beaumont, Texas, in 1942-1943, helped alleviate the submarine menace by logging over 14,000 hours in the air over the Gulf. CAP was unconventional. As a part of the Office of Civilian Defense, CAP’s members were civilians, many of whom were too old for the military. Other members owned airplanes or had experience flying to help go on missions patrolling the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico searching for enemy submarines or survivors of sub attacks. Although the men had training in military protocol, they remained civilians and often returned to their homes after completing their missions.
